The clerking service

We offer a comprehensive clerking service to governing bodies

Professional clerking

The importance of professional clerking has never been greater. Schools have been given increased freedoms and greater accountability and the government has recognised that the contribution professional clerking can make to effective governance of schools is very significant.

We offer a comprehensive clerking service to governing bodies. This includes:

  • proactive support with agenda setting, including the production of a draft agenda for each meeting
  • issuing the agenda and all the supporting paperwork
  • attendance at meetings to take minutes and provide advice on governance issues, when required
  • preparation, amendment and issuing of the minutes within 14 days of the meeting
  • general administrative support for the governing body including timetabling its work, monitoring policy reviews,
  • maintaining membership records, dealing with correspondence and filing

Further clerking of committee meetings, or any other extension of duties, can be arranged by mutual agreement between the governing body and the clerk. Governor Services must be advised of any such extension to the standard service which involves additional hours.

More information, together with our charging structure, can be found in the Clerking Service booklet.

Join us

If you are interested in becoming a clerk to a governing body, we would really like to hear from you. We are always looking for good prospective clerks to join our service. Although we are currently looking for those with previous clerking experience, this does not necessarily need to be in a school or educational setting.

Many of our clerks join us with experience in a non-educational setting but still have much to offer. All clerks that join us undertake a development programme, giving them opportunity to gain the knowledge and confidence they need to apply their skills to a school setting.

The clerk post offers opportunity for flexibility in working life along with the satisfaction that you are contributing toward the development of the school community. The governing body clerk is a valuable and valued member of the team.

If you are interested in the role, please check the County Council’s jobs website for vacancies. Full on going support is also offered to clerks beyond initial training as well as on-going development opportunities.

Accredited clerk programme

Our accredited clerk programme has been running for over 20 years. Clerks successfully completing the programme gain a Level 3 qualification.

Clerks who have completed the programme tell us they have:

  • Developed their knowledge and skills
  • Undertaken a wider range of professional tasks
  • Improved the practice of their governing body
  • Improved or enhanced professional working with the Head and Chair
  • Gained confidence and are able to intervene more easily to advise
  • Gained a sense of achievement
