  • Finding a new challenge in the public sector was a significant motivation for joining the County Council

What made you move to the public sector?

I joined Hampshire Scientific Service (HSS) in 2007 after working in the private sector of the asbestos industry for six years. The pressures and culture in the private sector is extremely different and therefore finding a new challenge in the public sector was a significant motivation for joining the County Council. I was attracted to the way they manage asbestos within the estate and that quality was the key driver within the office – plus I knew they needed players for their football and badminton team!

    How has your role changed?

Over the years my role has changed a lot which always keeps things fresh and new – I started by overseeing asbestos surveys and asbestos removal projects, along the way the County Council funded several qualifications to complement these roles such as PRINCE 2 project management and BOHS assessment courses. During the most recent years I have been heading up the operational side of project delivery to our colleagues in Property Services and even more recently been involved with delivery of asbestos proficiency modules now that HSS is an accredited training provider.

What is it like working for the County Council?

Hampshire County Council has provided an extremely supportive work environment both professionally and personally, the biggest positives from working at Hampshire County Council is the continued investment in its people and never knowing what new challenge is around the corner!
