Tammy - Work based trainer (assessor)

Tammy always knew she wanted to work with children — she just wasn’t sure how. She started out studying geography at university with plans to become a teacher, but quickly realised it wasn’t the right path. After leaving uni, she went to a local job fair and spotted an opportunity to start a Level 3 childcare apprenticeship. One quick interview later, she was in!

Starting at 18, Tammy admits she was a bit naïve about what working in a nursery really involved. But she quickly learned how important teamwork is, and how every child is different — even siblings. She discovered how skilled early years educators need to be to spot individual needs and adapt their approach. It was a steep learning curve, but incredibly rewarding.

After qualifying, Tammy stayed with the same company, progressing to senior practitioner and then room lead in a brand-new nursery. She helped shape how it was run and even returned to university to complete a foundation degree. Over the years, she worked in settings across Hampshire and London, eventually becoming a deputy manager.

After having her daughter, Tammy moved into training and assessing apprentices. She now supports learners at Levels 2, 3 and 5, helping them build the skills and confidence needed to thrive in early years. She’s passionate about challenging the myth that childcare is “just playing” — it’s a demanding, skilled and vital job.

Tammy’s journey shows how far a childcare career can take you — and how important it is to invest in the next generation of educators.
