How to get started
Getting started in childcare is easier than you might think. Many roles are open to school and college leavers, and you can often begin working while studying for your qualifications.
If you're a school leaver, you can:
- Apply for a college course in Early Years Education or Childcare
- Start an apprenticeship, earning while you learn
- Gain valuable experience through volunteering – a great way to build confidence and skills
To find volunteering opportunities or approach local childcare employers, visit the Family Information Service Hub for guidance and contacts in your area.
If you're a college leaver, you can:
- Apply for an apprenticeship to continue learning on the job
- Gain experience through volunteering or entry-level roles such as a nursery assistant
Many employers will support you in working towards a Level 2 or Level 3 qualification while you gain hands-on experience in a real childcare setting.
Qualifications you can gain in the first two years
In your first two years, you can work towards:
- Level 2 Certificate in Childcare or Early Years Education – A great starting point for those new to the sector.
- Level 3 Diploma in Early Years Education and Care – This qualification allows you to work unsupervised and opens up more career options.
- Apprenticeships – Earn while you learn, with structured training and real-world experience.
These qualifications are nationally recognised and can lead to further study or specialisation.
