The Atlas of Hampshire’s Archaeology
An analysis of the archaeology of Hampshire
The Historic Environment Record (HER) contains around fifty thousand entries describing the archaeology of Hampshire.
Analysing the distributions of this complex data using GIS gives us a fascinating insight into the development of the Hampshire landscape. The Atlas of Hampshire's Archaeology presents the HER data as maps. It provides the opportunity to enjoy and understand the archaeological story of Hampshire.
By displaying the HER data alongside other information, such as topography and landscape type, patterns start to emerge. This gives us a clearer understanding of the archaeological potential of different landscapes.
The maps will be of interest to a wider audience. This includes those seeking to know what has been found in their area, such as:
- students and academics undertaking research
- consultants preparing advice for developers
The Atlas offers an opportunity to share the emerging story of Hampshire.
