Development of Carer Training
A new training course was developed for Adults’ Health and Care staff to strengthen their understanding of how to work effectively with carers. The course was created in response to audit findings and feedback, which highlighted opportunities to improve practice and better support carers.
To ensure the training reflected real experiences, carers and voluntary organisations were involved from the start. They helped shape the content by sharing what they felt staff needed to know, reviewed the materials before delivery, and some even now attend sessions to share their stories directly with staff. These lived experiences have been turned into anonymised case studies, which are used throughout the course to bring the learning to life.
Staff were also consulted during development to ensure the course addressed current practice challenges and met their learning needs. This collaborative approach helped create a course that is both practical and meaningful.
The training has been very well received, with staff reporting increased awareness of the importance of carers’ assessments and how to better support carers in their roles. Internal audits have shown improvements in practice, and feedback highlights how valuable it is to hear directly from carers.
