A positive approach to care and support

The signatories of this concordat are committed to understanding and formulating the context and meaning of behaviour, to inform the development of supportive environments and skills that can enhance a person's quality of life. The behaviour plans and support are to be person-centred and values-based, ensuring that individuals are living the best life they possibly can.

Components

Signatories of this concordat are committed to embedding these 10 key components that constitute a positive approach to care and support.

Component 1

We will aim to prevent and reduce challenging behaviour by creating environments that focus on increasing quality of life, supporting inclusion, participation and valued social roles.

Component 2

We will design interventions with the aim of adding to stakeholders’ lives, building skills and opportunities, and avoiding restrictive practices.

Component 3

We will assess individuals and design interventions in collaboration with the person and their network. Stakeholders will also contribute to our reflections on plans, promoting integrity and coherence with the plan.

Component 4

We recognise that challenging behaviour develops to serve important functions for people.

Component 5

We will take a scientific and evidence-based approach to managing behaviour change.

Component 6

We will take a holistic approach to delivery, incorporating other evidence-based approaches which are complementary (such as Cognitive Behaviour Therapy or the five good communication standards) so our whole system and environment supports behaviour change.

Component 7

All decision making will be informed by data and relevant research, and will not be based on personal opinion or circumstance.

Component 8

We will use functional assessments to inform function-based interventions.

Component 9

Our plans will include proactive strategies to prevent challenging behaviour from happening, skills teaching strategies to make challenging behaviour less likely and reactive strategies that minimise the restrictions used, if they do occur.

Component 10

Our approach will actively support outcomes for people over the long term. We will monitor restrictions and interventions and aim to maintain people’s quality of life.
