Creativity for Wellbeing
Get creative to boost mental wellbeing
Being creative and taking part in cultural or heritage activities is a fun and easy way to boost your mood, reduce anxious feelings and build self-esteem.
Everyone is creative. There are lots of ways to add creativity into your weekly routine – from doodling on the shopping list to becoming a member of a local musical theatre group – it all counts!
We’re inviting you to start or continue to take part in arts and cultural activities that you love - just two hours a week is shown to improve mental wellbeing. That could simply be 20 minutes reading a book each day or a weekly choir club. Whatever you choose, it should bring joy and playfulness to your everyday. Learning something new can inspire a hobby, which brings you purpose and connects you with others who share similar interests.
Lose yourself in a chosen activity, find a sense of meaning and distract from everyday stressors – it is good for your mood. It doesn’t need to be perfect, just no-pressure enjoyment.
You don’t need to be a professional creative for creativity to be good for you.
These webpages explore creativity for enjoyment and good wellbeing - it is for everyone, regardless of health status, and can be part of everyday life. It does not refer to arts or creative therapy, which involves a qualified therapist and individuals who undertake creative activities for diagnostic or treatment purposes.
