Destination Calshot
Calshot spit is a hidden gem on the outskirts of the New Forest National Park. In addition to the wide range of exciting activities on offer at Calshot Activites Centre, it’s an area that’s steeped in history and natural beauty, so there’s more to explore than you may think. To help you make the most of your visit, here’s our quick guide to what’s on offer at Calshot spit.
Journey into the past
From early defences set up by Henry VIII to its role as an RAF station, the land, water, and skies above Calshot spit have seen plenty of military activity thanks to its tactical position at the entrance to Southampton water. Overlooking the water is the picturesque Calshot Castle (open seasonally). Pick up a history trail booklet and step inside the former Tudor artillery fort and discover Calshot’s fascinating history… or simply enjoy the panoramic views at the top of the Castle!
Beside the seaside
Take a gentle stroll along Calshot’s mile-long shingle beach. Lined with traditional English beach huts, it’s the perfect spot to watch the ships and cruise liners on the water thanks to uninterrupted views across the Solent towards the Isle of Wight and Southampton. After you’ve dipped your toes in the water, venture to the saltmarshes on the other side of the spit and enjoy the diverse landscape and wildlife that is unique to a location like Calshot.
Explore the Solent shore
From the New Forest National Park to nearby Lepe Country Park, there are plenty of circular walking routes which can be enjoyed from Calshot. Set off along the coast and discover more wartime artifacts backed by natural beauty, then head inland where wild New Forest ponies and other wildlife roam free. With parking, refreshments, and toilets available at the Activities Centre, Calshot is the perfect base for your next adventure.
A café with a view
With spectacular views across the Solent, the licensed café bar at Calshot is the ideal place to relax – whatever the weather. Soak up the sun with a drink on the beachside terrace or cosy away from the elements and enjoy light bites and cakes, plus wholesome and delicious meals. Perfect for a post-adventure snack or a treat after a long walk or day on the beach.
