Upcoming Works on the A27 Segensworth Link
Starting the week of 28 April 2025, trees and vegetation will be removed, adjacent to the southbound carriageway of the A27 Segensworth Link, between the road overbridge and the underpass beneath the A27. This is to enable investigatory works for the proposed shared-use path extension in this area. The works are expected to last for one week and will facilitate the delivery of the scheme, as approved by the Executive Member on 3 March 2025.
While most clearance works will be conducted during daytime hours, some night time works involving tree felling and chipping will be necessary. Traffic management will be in place on the M27 Junction westbound off-slip and onto the A27 Segensworth Link during night time hours, involving a closure of the nearside lane to facilitate machinery access to the bottom of the A27 embankment.
- Scheme overview
-
The proposed scheme will extend the shared-use footway from M27 Junction 9 along the A27 to a point south of the railway overbridge, where a shared-use ramp will connect with the existing walking and cycling infrastructure that runs east-west beneath the A27 Segensworth Link. This revised scheme will improve functionality for both pedestrians and cyclists over the previously proposed footway scheme, providing a continuous shared-use connection for walking and cycling between Whiteley and Segensworth.
The scheme also includes an enhanced parapet on the bridge over the Southampton-Portsmouth railway line to ensure a safe environment for users of the new link.
This project aligns with the goals outlined in the Local Transport Plan 4 (LTP4), which aims to create a more sustainable and accessible transport network. Specifically, the scheme will:
- Provide more space for people to walk;
- Improve the local environment and air quality;
- Increase accessibility to local shops and services for all.
Construction works are expected to commence in March 2026.
In the interim, alternative safe walking routes for those wishing to travel between Parkway South Roundabout and Segensworth Roundabout are available using the existing footway network identified in this map.
Approval to progress with implementation of the scheme was given at the Executive Lead Member for Universal Services Decision Day on 3 March 2025. Please read the Decision Report.
- Funding Arrangements
- Funding to support the delivery of the scheme has been received from Active Travel England through Tranche 4 of its Active Travel Fund (ATF4). Additional funding for the scheme will also be drawn from the North Whiteley major development area section 106 (s106) agreement secured as part of the planning permission granted for the development, which included a financial contribution to improve local walking and cycling access between Segensworth and the new development, including a new pedestrian/ cycle link adjacent to the A27 Segensworth Link.
