A27 Segensworth Link - Eastern Footway
To provide a safe walking route from M27 Junction 9 to Segensworth roundabout and Whiteley
Last update: September 2024
- Scheme overview
-
The completed major scheme M27 Junction 9 provides signalised crossing points and a new 3m wide shared-use footway from the northern end of the A27 Segensworth Link, across the M27 Junction 9 and along Whiteley Way, up to the Parkway South Roundabout.
The proposed scheme will extend the shared-use footway from M27 Junction 9 along the A27 to a point south of the railway overbridge where a shared-use ramp will tie-in with the existing walking / cycling infrastructure that runs east-west beneath the A27 Segensworth Link. This revised scheme will provide improved functionality for both pedestrian and cyclists over the previously proposed footway scheme and provide a continual shared-use connection to enable people to walk and cycle between Whiteley and Segensworth.
The scheme also includes for an enhanced parapet on the bridge over the Southampton - Portsmouth railway line to provide a safe environment for walking using the new link.
The construction works are expected to commence in Summer 2025.
Specifically, we want to:
- provide more space for people to walk
- make the route safer for all road users
- improve the local environment and air quality
- increase accessibility to local shops and services for all.
In the interim, alternative safe walking routes for those wishing to travel between Parkway South Roundabout and Segensworth Roundabout are available using the existing footway network identified in this map.
- Funding Arrangements
- The North Whiteley major development area section 106 (s106) agreement secured as part of the planning permission granted for the development, included a financial contribution to improve local walking and cycling access between Segensworth and the new development. The agreement covered a range of works to be delivered, including a new footway adjacent to the A27 Segensworth Link.
