Creating safer and more accessible journeys through improved crossing facilities that support walking, cycling and other active travel choices.

Last update: August 2026

Scheme overview

Hampshire County Council is developing proposals to improve pedestrian safety and crossing facilities on Bereweeke Road in Winchester. The proposals for two new zebra crossings, one close to the junction with Andover Road and the other near the junction with Stockbridge Road, creating safer and more convenient crossing points for people travelling through the area.

The proposed crossings would be located:

  • On Bereweeke Road close to its junction with Andover Road.
  • On Bereweeke Road close to its junction with Stockbridge Road.

The proposed crossing near Andover Road would replace the existing uncontrolled crossing and be positioned closer to the junction, where visibility between approaching drivers and people waiting to cross is improved.

Key benefits

  • Safer crossing points for pedestrians at two locations on Bereweeke Road.
  • Improved accessibility for people walking, wheeling (using a wheelchair, mobility scooter or other mobility aid) and cycling.
  • Better connections to local facilities and services.
  • Support for active travel and healthier lifestyle choices.
  • Enhanced road safety through improved visibility and crossing provision.

This proposal supports the objectives of Hampshire County Council's Local Transport Plan 4 (LTP4), which aims to create safer, healthier and more sustainable communities by improving opportunities for walking, wheeling and cycling. By providing safer crossing facilities on Bereweeke Road, the scheme would help people make local journeys more easily, encourage active travel, improve accessibility, and contribute to creating streets that are safer and more attractive for everyone to use.
