Colden Common Pedestrian and Cycle Improvements

Creating a safer and more pleasant environment for the local community while encouraging healthier lifestyle choices and supporting active travel.

Last update: October 2026

Scheme Overview

Hampshire County Council is developing proposals to improve walking, wheeling and cycling facilities in Colden Common.

The scheme has been identified following concerns raised by the local community regarding pedestrian safety, accessibility and active travel opportunities within the village. Particular concerns relate to crossing busy roads, access to Colden Common Primary School, vehicle speeds, and the availability of safe and convenient routes for walking and cycling.

The project will investigate opportunities to improve conditions for pedestrians and cyclists and support safer, more sustainable journeys throughout the village.

Proposed Improvements

The scheme is currently at an early stage and a range of potential improvements are being explored, including:

  • Improvements to accessibility and safety for people travelling to and from Colden Common Primary School.
  • Improvements to pedestrian safety on St Vigor Way, near the Community Centre car park.
  • Improvements to walking and cycling routes along Spring Lane and Church Lane.
  • Measures to improve pedestrian crossing opportunities on Main Road near Sandyfields Lane.

As the project develops, further surveys and technical assessments will help identify the most effective measures to take forward.

Why Are Improvements Needed?
Colden Common residents have identified several issues affecting the safety and attractiveness of walking and cycling in the village.

These include:
  • High traffic volumes and vehicle speeds on Main Road (B3354).
  • Difficulties crossing roads.
  • Concerns about road safety for children travelling to and from school.
  • A lack of dedicated active travel routes connecting key destinations.
Next Steps
The project is currently in the feasibility and scheme development stage. This involves gathering additional evidence and developing potential options for consultation and further design and delivery. Updates will be published on this page as the scheme progresses.
Funding
Funding for the transport capital delivery schemes is separate from the County Council’s revenue budget and savings proposals. In the majority of cases funding comes from external grants and / or Section 106 contribution from developers. This funding usually has conditions that strictly control on how, where and when it can be spent.
