Latest Update on Construction Programme and Zebra Crossing

Hampshire County Council has appointed M Group to carry out works on The Causeway and Sussex Road in Petersfield.

During construction in April 2026, previously unidentified utility services were discovered in the original crossing location. As a result, the crossing was repositioned closer to the Tesco roundabout, and the associated Belisha beacons and lighting design required review and amendment.
Since then, we have been redesigning the crossing lighting to ensure it meets current standards and provides the correct level of illumination for the safety of all users. This work involves coordination with a number of third parties, and we are currently finalising arrangements and revised dates for the lighting installation.
Once the lighting works are complete, we will undertake the final road marking works before opening the crossing for public use.

This webpage and the construction programme will be updated as soon as the revised programme has been confirmed.

Scheme Overview & Objectives

The proposed scheme is a new pedestrian and cyclist crossing at the Causeway/Sussex Road/Hylton Road/Dragon Street junction. This scheme supports the broader vision of creating safer and more connected neighbourhoods and is designed to:

  • Improve road safety for all users.
  • Encourage walking and cycling as sustainable travel options.
  • Enhance the character of Petersfield by embracing its natural and rural features through thoughtful placemaking — transforming public spaces into vibrant, community-focused areas.

This proposal aligns with Hampshire County Council's Local Transport Plan 4 (LTP4), which envisions a carbon-neutral, resilient, and inclusive transport system by 2050. LTP4 focuses on reducing reliance on private cars, promoting active lifestyles, and supporting sustainable economic development. Aiming to create safer, more accessible, and environmentally friendly public spaces that reflect the principles of LTP4.

Hampshire County Council appointed Rocon Contractors Ltd and have completed the investigation works in April 2025. The following investigation works were undertaken:

Ground radar surveys identifying underground utilities;
Drainage jetting (cleansing) and CCTV inspection of existing drainage systems;
Investigation coring survey; workers drilled small holes in the road to take out samples; (These samples help them understand the road’s condition).
Funding Arrangements

Funding for the transport capital delivery schemes is separate from the County Council’s revenue budget and savings proposals. In the majority of cases funding comes from external grants and / or Section 106 contribution from developers. This funding usually has conditions that strictly control on how, where and when it can be spent.
