Scheme Overview

The Sherborne Road puffin crossing scheme will deliver a new signal-controlled crossing on Sherborne Road, south of the junction with Oakridge Road. This crossing will provide improved facilities for pedestrians while managing traffic flows on Sherborne Road. The works will also include widening sections of the footway near the crossing. Please see the crossing improvement plan.

The proposed scheme includes:

  • a signal-controlled puffin crossing on Sherborne Road
  • widening the footways near the crossing

Benefits of the scheme:

  • safer journeys to school, especially during busy drop-off and pick-up times
  • encourages walking and reduces car dependency, supporting healthier lifestyles and easing congestion
  • makes travel easier for people with disabilities, older residents, and those with visual impairments
  • strengthens community links by connecting homes, schools, and local services more effectively

This scheme was approved for implementation by the Director of Universal Services on 23 January 2026. Please see the Decision Report.

This proposal supports Hampshire County Council’s Local Transport Plan 4 (LTP4), which aims to improve accessibility and connectivity in the region.

Funding Arrangements
Funding for the transport capital delivery schemes is separate from the County Council’s revenue budget and savings proposals. In the majority of cases funding comes from external grants and / or Section 106 contribution from developers. This funding usually has conditions that strictly control on how, where and when it can be spent.
