Our Civil Engineering Scholarship Programme

If you are undertaking the MEng or BEng Civil Engineering course at the University of Portsmouth and are on target to achieve a minimum of an upper second class honours degree (i.e. 2:1 or higher), we have a fantastic opportunity for you to gain relevant work experience and get paid at the same time.

We are offering successful candidates summer work placements, the opportunity of an industrial placement year, and potentially long term employment with a place on our Institution of Civil Engineers (ICE) approved graduate training programme once you graduate.

You will benefit from improving your soft skills, like teamwork and time management, as well as your technical knowledge. And you’ll be able to show and record your professional development.

If you are selected for our Civil Engineering Scholarship Programme, we will give you paid summer and industrial year placements (pro rata to our usual salary range for this role, currently £18,933 to £19,941 per annum) and a bursary of £1,650 a year upon completion of the first successful summer placement.

I got access to experienced engineers across many disciplines which provided invaluable help for my dissertation
The opportunity to be given responsibility and new areas to learn vastly improved me as an engineer
It’s given me a boost towards obtaining chartered status, as I’ve been recording my experience against the ICE attributes

Our work

Hampshire County Council is a top performing local authority, with an important role in promoting economic prosperity and protecting the environment, developing the infrastructure and services required for economic, transport and housing growth.

The projects we undertake range from the delivery of winter maintenance and emergency weather service provision to large scale infrastructure developments and construction of major structures.

We are ambitious, which means we can offer enviable career opportunities, training and development to talented MEng and BEng Civil Engineering students who are interested in enhancing the lives of others through public sector projects.

We have offices throughout Hampshire as well as works in remote locations so the ability to drive is a key attribute, with access to a car also desirable.

We offer many opportunities to become involved with the multi-faceted aspects of our business by a variety of placements in different teams, which can include:

  • Network asset management
  • Structural design and maintenance
  • Major highway scheme design
  • Contract management
  • Site supervision
  • Safety engineering
  • Strategic transport

I worked as a site engineer on a multi-million pound project and co-ordinated the County Council’s Electric Vehicle Chargepoint Strategy. I had the assurance of a graduate role so in my final year I was able to solely focus on my studies with the additional benefit of a bursary to support me.
The standout benefit for me is the variety of work. Also, the bursary money certainly helps
