Alcohol misuse is the biggest risk factor for death, ill-health and disability among 15-49 year olds in the UK and a causal factor in more than 60 medical conditions, including liver cirrhosis, some cancers, high blood pressure and cardiovascular disease. An estimated around one in five adults drinks more alcohol than the recommended levels.

Inclusion Recovery Hampshire is a drug and alcohol treatment service for adults over 25 years old. You can access confidential support via their helpline on 0300 1240103.

Hampshire 24/7 is a drug and alcohol treatment service for young people aged under 25 years old. Call 0800 5999591 for support.
Other options
Confidential support and advice for parents, families and friends of those who use drugs and alcohol is available from Parent Support Link (PSL). You can call them on 0238 0399764.

Practitioners (with consent) can make a referral to community drug and alcohol treatment services in Hampshire by completing the online referral forms at Inclusion Recovery Hampshireor Hampshire 24/7. Individuals can also self-refer for support.

Having supportive conversations about alcohol
Talking about how much alcohol we drink can be a taboo subject. Having supportive conversations about someone’s alcohol use allows you to explore the issue and offer tailored advice and support.
Alcohol identification and brief advice has been shown to be effective in helping people to reduce their alcohol health risk. Free e-learning on the approach is provided by NHS England (NHSE) elearning for healthcare hub (elfh).

Become a MECC advocate
Make Every Contact Count (MECC) is a tool embedded in behaviour change theory to support your conversation on risk factors such as alcohol, especially when they can be tricky to discuss. Using this tool, you can guide patients on a behaviour change journey. You can register online for a MECC training session.
