Hampshire County Council, Portsmouth City Council and the Isle of Wight Council jointly secured nearly £56 million from the Government’s Transforming Cities Fund for new infrastructure to improve the way people travel around South-East Hampshire and on the Island - either on foot, by bicycle or bus. For more information on the bid please see the funding bids.
The funding supports the delivery of 23 schemes across the South-East Hampshire and Portsmouth areas. These schemes are in line with Government’s ambition to encourage people to leave the car at home and make greater use of public transport and to cycle and walk for their local journeys. This significant level of transport funding will have a transformative impact on people’s local journeys. It also supports the County Council’s drive to tackle climate change, contributing to our targets to be carbon neutral by 2050 and be resilient to a 2 degree rise in temperatures. This also aligns with the emerging Local Transport Plan 4 (LTP4) contributing towards a carbon neutral, resilient Hampshire including encouraging fewer vehicles on Hampshire's roads.
This Transforming Cities Fund allocation follows a previous award of £4m from the Fund, which in Hampshire has been used towards delivering real-time travel information for passengers at bus stops in and around Havant and Waterlooville and a scheme to extend the Eclipse busway to Rowner Road in Gosport. - Roadworks and Travel Advice
