When to register a death
When someone dies, you’ll need to register their death unless there’s a coroner’s inquest.
The Medical Examiners office will send the medical certificate of cause of death to the register office before the appointment to register the death.
If the coroner is involved you will not be able to register the death until their permission has been given. They will send us a Coroners notification and this will be used instead of a medical certificate cause of death. If an inquest is to be held the Coroners officer will advise you what to do in these circumstances.

Book an appointment to register a death
If the death occurred outside Hampshire, you may make a ‘declaration of the death’ at one of our offices. The details you give to the registrar will be sent to the district where the death occurred to be registered and for the documentation to be issued.
If you make an appointment in the district where the death occurred, you will receive all the documentation straight away.
