Our award winning tenant

Peter Barfoot, longstanding tenant of Hampshire County Farms, has received his CBE for Services to Sustainable Farming. Some of his key sustainability initiatives at Little Abshot Farm are:

  • working with LEAF on exemplar practices and becoming a demonstration farm
  • converting all farm produced waste to electricity through an AD plant, enabling the business to become carbon negative in its operation
  • on-farm reservoirs to store and reuse surface water for when it is most needed
  • continuous improvement of his supply chain’s carbon footprint
  • hedgerow planting and creation of wildlife corridors, including bird and bumblebee mixes
  • satellite fertility mapping and a sound rotation, with grass leys and livestock considered to play an essential part
My first rule of sustainability is profitability, without being profitable as a farmer your business will not be sustainable for very long.
