Types of direct payment

Understand which type of direct payment is right for you.

There are two types of direct payment:

One-off direct payment

A single payment made to cover a specific item.

An example of this could be buying a piece of specialist equipment (that isn’t available through Hampshire and Equipment services, NHS or Access to Work).

When a one-off direct payment works best

A one-off direct payment is best suited for individuals with occasional or one-time needs rather than individuals who require ongoing support.

Ongoing direct payment

A regular payment (four weekly) to allow an individual or their representative to pay for their ongoing care and support needs.

For example:

When an ongoing direct payment works best

An ongoing direct payment is mainly for individuals who require continuous or repeated support to live independently or to manage daily life.

Choosing the right type of direct payment

The type of direct payment you receive depends on your assessed care and support needs.

Your allocated practitioner will work with you to decide which type of direct payment will best help you.

Support with direct payments

If you have any questions about direct payments or require further information, contact the Direct Payment Support Service (DPSS).

The DPSS can not assist with setting up direct payments. To enquire about setting up a direct payment, make a request to the adults' social care team.
