Frequently asked questions
Accommodation
Do I need to bring bedding or sleeping bags?
Please bring your own bedding and towels (duvet cover, single sheet, pillowcase, towel). Bedding is available for hire on request at an additional charge.
Will we be sharing the building with another family/group?
No, only if you book with another party. Our farmhouse can accommodate 22 people in 5 rooms. Our longbarn can accommodate 14 people in 3 rooms.
Is the accommodation secure?
Accommodation buildings have keycode doors to prevent public access.
Activities
Can we choose the activities we have on our programme?
We will create the programme in conversation with you. The weather will also play its part, but we will discuss any changes which occur with you as they arise.
Do all members of the family have to take part in everything? Can we leave the children with your instructors?
Our mission is to try and include as many people in as much as possible! However, nobody will be forced to take part in anything they don’t wish to. Your instructor will work closely with you to create a positive, open environment where participants will feel able to stretch themselves and try new activities, but it will always be your choice whether you participate or not. This holiday is all about spending family time together, so we would encourage all group members to stay together, even if some are not participating. At least one parent must always be with the children during the activities.
What time are the activities?
We want to make the most of your time with us so the days will be filled with action-packed activities. Meet the instructor at 9am who will be with you until 5pm when there will be time for a well-earned rest before dinner. If you would like additional evening activities, please talk to us as soon as possible so we can make arrangements.
Will we be in an activity with other families or on our own?
Depending on the size of your family, we may combine family groups to create larger activity groups for at least some of the visit. Our teaching ratios are 12:1 for all activities, so your group size will never exceed this amount.
What happens if the weather is poor?
Your instructor will talk through alternative options if any sessions cannot go ahead due to poor weather (e.g. high water levels preventing access). Where possible, we will rearrange your programme to keep the same activities as planned, however this may not be possible in all cases and alternative activities will be offered.
How do you keep your activities safe?
The safety of participants is our number one priority. Argoed Lwyd Outdoor Education Centre operates within the guidelines set by national governing bodies as well as conforming to the high standards of Hampshire County Council. We hold an AALS License awarded by the Health and Safety Executive.
If somebody in my family can’t swim, can they still join in with watersports?
Yes! We aim to include as many willing participants as possible. You will need to indicate ‘water confidence’ on our medical form so that your instructor can plan the session and equipment to best meet the needs of your group.
What clothing and equipment do we need to bring with us?
In general, old, comfortable clothing works best with suitable footwear, such as trainers – not flip flops. We will provide all specialist equipment required for the activities on your programme – including wetsuits, cagoules and buoyancy aids for watersports
Food
What meals are included?
This is a self-catered holiday giving you the freedom to cook the meals you want or explore the local culinary delights!
What sort of food can we find locally?
There are several large supermarkets in Brecon, a short 10 minute drive away, as well as a greengrocer, butchers and a zero-waste shop.
Where can we eat out?
There’s a pub a short walk away and numerous country pubs dotted around the local villages to explore. In Brecon itself there are Indian, Thai and Nepalese restaurants. If it’s traditional pies you’re looking for, we know just the place, so don’t forget to ask our instructors for their recommendations!
Will we have time to cook?
You will need to be finished with breakfast by 9am in time to meet your instructor and get the most out of the day’s activities. You’ll be back at the centre in time to get freshened up ready for your evening plans by 5.30pm.
How will lunch work?
The activity plan includes activities away from the centre, so you can find cafes and pubs locally or tuck into a picnic lunch. Each day we’ll find a nice spot to rest, recuperate and refuel before moving on to our next adventure. Make sure you pack a tasty lunch that will fuel you up!
What self-catering facilities are there?
Our kitchens are stocked with all the equipment you’ll need. The large ovens are big enough to cook for the largest groups we can sleep. There’s a large fridge and freezer, microwave, kettle, and all the pots and crockery you might need.
Site/area
Is there a shop or bar on site?
No, but the market town of Brecon is only 4 miles away and has several small supermarkets, garages, pharmacies, ice cream shops, cafes and pubs. The Brecon Beacons National Park Visitors Centre is only a 15-minute walk away.
Is the site open to the public?
No, the site is not open to the public. If we’re expecting any visitors to the site you will be informed. As there are two accommodation areas, it is possible that there will be another family on the grounds.
Is there WiFi?
There is no WiFi available as we offer a digital detox. We do have projectors and screens which can be connected to a laptop to create a home cinema feel.
Are there any laundry facilities available onsite?
There are no laundry facilities available, however there are local laundrettes.
