Further information about access protection markings
Additional information and guidance
Why do I have to pay for my road marking?
Your driveway is not part of the public highway network and therefore forms a private asset. Any lines installed to protect it would be solely for your benefit and not for the good of all road users. Current policy is in line with many other local authorities countrywide who also charge for initial installation of APM. Any repainting subsequently is treated as a new application and charged accordingly.
Can I park on my APM?
The marking is provided solely to highlight the presence of your driveway to others who are looking to park on the street, if you park in the APM marking across your driveway, then it devalues the meaning of the marking. It may also show to other drivers that you do not need access to your driveway.
Can I have a APM opposite my driveway or access?
We do not offer to paint white lines on the opposite side of the road to the property requesting them as a form of parking management, this would not be the appropriate use of the APM markings which are used solely to highlight an access. If you are having trouble leaving a driveway/access due to parked vehicles on the opposite side of the road, the recommended advice would be to look at widening your driveway/access and then extending your dropped kerb, this may give you sufficient room to manoeuvre onto & off your driveway.
More information on how to apply for a wider dropped kerb can be found on the apply for a vehicular access page.
Can I paint my own APM?
Line painting works should only be carried out by the approved council contractors, using the correctly prescribed methods and materials. It is an offence for the public to mark lines or erect signs on the highway without the consent of the highway authority as per the Highways Act 1980 Section 132 (1).
