Accepted
Aluminium
Can be placed in the non-ferrous metal container at your local HWRC.
Baths
Baths can be taken to your local HWRC for disposal. Please see site staff for guidance on which container to use.
Batteries
Household batteries can be recycled at all of the household waste recycling centres in Hampshire. Each site has a designated bin where all batteries should be placed.
Bedding and quilts and pillows and sleeping bags
These items can be taken to your local HWRC for disposal. Please see site staff for guidance on which container to use.
Car batteries
Car batteries can be taken to your local household waste recycling centre for recycling and safe disposal. On arrival, please ask site staff who will be able to direct you to the appropriate container.
Cardboard
Large cardboard boxes and packaging can be recycled at your local HWRC. Please place newspapers, magazines and paper in your kerbside recycling bin instead.
Carpets
Carpets can be taken to your local HWRC for disposal. Place in the container for non-recyclable waste.
Christmas trees - real
Place in the green waste container at your local HWRC.
Electrical equipment and appliances
Electrical equipment can be taken to your local HWRC for recycling and safe disposal.
Foil
Foil can be recycled at any HWRC in Hampshire.
Fridges/freezers
Fridges and freezers can be taken to your local HWRC for recycling and safe disposal. Appliances should be brought whole, with no parts removed.
Please ask a member of staff on arrival at the site about where to place the item.
Garden waste
Green waste can be taken to your local HWRC. From here it is taken then turned into Pro-Grow Soil Conditioner which is available to buy from all HWRCs.
Light bulbs
Energy efficient light bulbs and fluorescent tubes can be recycled at your local HWRC.
- Halogen lightbulbs should be disposed of in the non-recyclable waste bin.
- LED light bulbs should be placed in the small electrical appliances container.
Mattress
Mattresses can be taken to your local HWRC for disposal. Place in the container for non-recyclable waste.
Mobile phones
Mobile phones can be taken to your local HWRC for recycling. Please ensure that SIM cards are removed and personal data is deleted from the device.
Printer cartridges
Printer cartridges can be taken to your local HWRC for recycling.
Scrap metal
Unwanted metal items from your household can be recycled at any HWRC in Hampshire.
Textiles
Most HWRCs have a clothing/textile and shoe bank for recycling and reuse. Includes all clothing, linen, curtains, shoes and other household textiles. Items should be bagged before placing in the bank.
Vapes and E-cigarettes
Single use and reusable e-cigarettes and vapes can be taken to your local HWRC for recycling. Please do not place these in your bin at home as they create a serious fire risk.
Wallpaper
Large amounts of wallpaper from your home can be taken to your local household waste recycling centre (HWRC) for disposal.
Wood
Treated, untreated and mixed wood can be reused or recycled at your local HWRC. Bulky items such as furniture can be sold in the on site sales area for reuse.
The Environment Agency classifies redundant railway sleepers, which will have been treated with creosote or copper chromium Arsenic (CCA) for their original use, as hazardous waste wood. This means they can no longer be accepted at the HWRCs.
Restricted
Animal waste
A maximum of two bin bags can be deposited per household per day, and waste must be double bagged before disposal. If you have more than the accepted amount as stated, please contact a private disposal company.
Engine oil
Engine oil can be taken to your local HWRC. The oil must be deposited in a suitable sealed container, a maximum of 10 litres can be deposited per household per six months. If you have more than the accepted amount, please contact a private disposal company.
Fire extinguishers
Fire extinguishers are only accepted at HWRCs if the manufacturer is unable to take them back.
Halon fire extinguishers are not accepted at Waterlooville, Paulsgrove, Havant or Andover HWRCs.
Furniture
Furniture can be taken to your local HWRC, where it can be sold on for reuse if in good condition. Ask a member of staff on arrival at the site about where to place the item.
There is guidance regarding the disposal of waste upholstered domestic seating. This includes: sofas, armchairs, upholstered dining or office chairs, stools and footstools, bean bags, floor or sofa cushions.
Gas bottles
HWRCs accept gas bottles up to 15kg in size, either propane or butane. SCUBA diving bottles, Nitrous Oxide cylinders and air cylinders are only accepted if no alternative disposal route can be used. Alternatively you may need to contact a private disposal company.
Paint
Paint can be taken to your local HWRC for disposal. Paint should be deposited in a suitable, sealed container.
Note: A maximum of five litres per month per household can be deposited.
Plasterboard
Plasterboard is charged at £10 for each sheet (maximum size 3 x 1.2m) or part sheet, and £6 for each standard rubble bag or part bag, up to a maximum of 53.5 x 82cm (when laid flat), filled so that the waste is contained and can be safely lifted.
We can currently accept payment by card only at all HWRCs.
There is no limit to the amount of plasterboard you can bring.
Sites have a dedicated container for plasterboard - please ask site staff for assistance.
Visitors wishing to dispose of plasterboard, plaster or gypsum based products mixed with other waste types must separate them prior to visiting the HWRC so they can be disposed of separately. The removal of tiles from plasterboard may be made easier if soaked in water.
Rubble
Costs and ways to pay
Rubble is charged at
- £3 for each standard rubble bag or part bag, up to a maximum of 53.5 x 82cm (when laid flat), filled so that the waste is contained and can be safely lifted.
- £3 per individual item of standard sized sanitary ware.
For example if you bring a basin, a pedestal and a toilet cistern, then there will be a charge for 3 individual items, total £9
Oversized items such as ceramic double bowl sinks, draining boards and large shower trays may be subject to an additional charge.
Visitors wishing to dispose of rubble based products mixed with other waste types (e.g. tiles with plasterboard attached) must separate them prior to visiting the HWRC so they can be disposed of separately. The removal of tiles from plasterboard may be made easier if soaked in water.
We can currently accept payment by card only at all HWRCs.
There is no limit to the amount of rubble you can bring. Rubble includes construction and demolition materials such as stone, rubble, clay, concrete, bricks, blocks, sand, tiles, paving slabs, and ceramic bathroom suites. There will be no charge for crockery or clay/terracotta flower pots.
Please remove packaging, such as bags holding hardened cement, before disposal.

Sinks and toilets
Ceramic sanitary ware including sink basins, pedestals and toilet cisterns can be taken to your local HWRC for disposal. There is a charge for these items as for all rubble.

- £3 for each standard rubble bag or part bag, up to a maximum of 53.5 x 82cm (when laid flat), filled so that the waste is contained and can be safely lifted

Upholstered domestic seating
Waste upholstered domestic seating may contain Persistent Organic Pollutants (POPs). This includes: sofas, armchairs, upholstered dining or office chairs, stools and footstools, bean bags, floor or sofa cushions.
POPs are certain chemical substances that stay intact and do not break down. If waste containing POPs is not managed responsibly, it could cause damage to the wider environment.
Ensure waste upholstered domestic seating is kept whole where possible. Any damaged parts must be contained to reduce the risk of any textile or foam escaping into the environment on transit. Ask a member of staff on arrival at the site about where to place the item or if you require assistance.
Not accepted
Ammunition
HWRCs are not licensed to accept ammunition or explosives. Please contact your local police station for advice.
Asbestos
Where to take and how to book
Small amounts of cement bonded asbestos sheet (no more than 15 sheets size 1200mm x 600mm) can be taken to one of five Household Waste Recycling Centres (HWRCs) licensed to receive this type of hazardous waste. No other type of asbestos is allowed.

You must phone in advance to pre-book and to check that the container is not full and awaiting emptying, or you may not be able to deposit your cement bonded asbestos.
Costs and how to pay
Asbestos is charged at £12 for each sheet or part sheet, maximum sheet size 1200 x 600mm.
We can currently accept payment by card only at all HWRCs.
Safe handling
For health and safety reasons, all whole sheets should be wrapped securely in plastic sheeting and should be transported whole. Small or broken pieces should be double bagged and securely sealed when brought to the site. Avoid breaking the material where possible. Cooking oil
Cooking oil can be placed in a sealed container in your general waste bin at home. You should not pour it down the sink.
Explosives
HWRCs are not licensed to accept ammunition or explosives. Please contact your local police station for advice.
Flares
Flares are not accepted at HWRCs. If you have out-of-date or damaged flares, first contact the place where you bought the flares. They may operate a 'take back' scheme. If not, the Solent Maritime Rescue Co-ordination Centre are able to accept small amounts of out of date or damaged flares. Call first on 02392 552100, to find your nearest disposal site and its opening times. You'll have to deliver the flares to the disposal site at an agreed time.
Fuel - petrol or diesel
Fuels are not accepted at HWRCs. Please contact a commercial disposal company or search for car breakers or garages in the Yellow Pages.
Glass bottles and jars
Following a decision in October 2020, glass bins at all Hampshire HWRCs have been removed.
There are many other glass banks across Hampshire which are available for residents to use. Portsmouth HWRC also accepts glass. You can find your nearest glass bank on the Recycle Now website.
When recycling glass bottles and jars with a metal lid, wash and place it back on the bottle/jar. Do not replace regular or plastic corks however, these should be reused where possible or placed in your non-recyclable waste bin.
Household and garden chemicals
This includes hazardous items such as white spirit, anti-freeze, oven cleaners, weed killers, insecticides, lubricants, and drain cleaners. Usually identified by a black and orange hazardous symbol on the packaging/bottle.
Hazardous household waste is accepted at 11 specially licensed HWRCs. Such items must be delivered in a suitable sealed container.
Note: a maximum of five litres can be deposited per month per household.

Japanese Knotweed
Japanese Knotweed and soil contaminated with it and some other controlled plants cannot be accepted at sites under any circumstances. Please contact the Environment Agency for disposal advice via their website or call 0370 8506506.
Medicines
Medicines can be returned to your local dispensing chemist for safe disposal.

Tyres
Tyres can no longer be disposed of in landfill sites, and will not be accepted at our sites. They should be taken to a local garage or tyre and exhaust centre where they will be disposed of safely (a small charge may apply). When you purchase new tyres the garage may take the old ones. They could also be taken to a car breakers, but ring first to check.
