Accepted
Baths
Baths can be taken to your local HWRC for disposal. Please see site staff for guidance on which container to use.
Batteries
Household batteries can be recycled at all HWRCs. Each site has a designated bin where all batteries should be placed.
Batteries should never be placed in your recycling bin at home as they pose a serious fire risk at waste facilities.
Bedding and quilts and pillows and sleeping bags
You can take these items to your local HWRC for disposal. Please see site staff for guidance on which container to use.
Car batteries
Car batteries can be taken to your local HWRC recycling and safe disposal. Please see site staff for guidance on which container to use.
Cardboard
Large cardboard boxes and packaging can be recycled at your local HWRC. Flatten boxes first.
Place newspapers, magazines and paper in your kerbside recycling bin instead.
Carpets
Carpets can be taken to your local HWRC for disposal. See site staff for guidance on which container to use.
Christmas trees - real
Real Christmas trees can be placed in the green waste container at your local HWRC.
Electrical equipment and appliances
Electrical equipment and appliances can be taken to your local HWRC for recycling and safe disposal.
Place in a WEEE (Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment) drop off point.
Fridges/freezers
Fridges and freezers can be taken to your local HWRC for recycling and safe disposal.
Appliances should be brought whole, with no parts removed. Please see site staff for guidance on where to place the item.
Garden waste
Garden waste can be taken to your local HWRC. From here it is taken to be turned into Pro-Grow Soil Conditioner which is available to buy from all HWRCs.
Place in the green waste container.
Knives and scissors
Knives and scissors can be taken to your local HWRC.
Wrap the blade carefully in cardboard or fabric, such as a tea towel, to transport safely to the HWRC and hand to site staff. They will place the scissors or knife in the ferrous metal bin for recycling.
Light bulbs
Energy efficient light bulbs and fluorescent tubes can be recycled at your local HWRC.
LED light bulbs should be placed in the small electrical appliances container.
Halogen lightbulbs should be disposed of in the non-recyclable waste bin.
Mattress
Mattresses can be taken to your local HWRC for disposal.

Mobile phones
Mobile phones can be taken to your local HWRC for recycling.
Ensure SIM cards are removed and personal data is deleted from the device.

Printer cartridges
Printer cartridges can be taken to your local HWRC for recycling.

Vapes and E-cigarettes
If you can remove the battery safely, this can be placed in a battery recycling bin.
The rest of the vape or e-cigarette should then be placed in a WEEE (Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment) drop off point at HWRCs.
If you cannot remove the battery safely, place the whole item in the WEEE drop off point.
Wood
Treated, untreated and mixed wood can be reused or recycled at your local HWRC. Bulky items such as furniture can be sold in the onsite sales area for reuse.
The Environment Agency classifies redundant railway sleepers, which will have been treated with creosote or copper chromium Arsenic (CCA) for their original use, as hazardous waste wood. This means they can no longer be accepted at the HWRCs.
Restricted
Animal waste
You can deposit a maximum of two bin bags of animal waste per household per day at your local HWRC.
Make sure that your animal waste is double bagged before your arrival. If you have more than two bags per day, contact a private disposal company.
Engine oil
Engine oil can be taken to your local HWRC.
The oil must be deposited in a suitable sealed container, a maximum of 10 litres can be deposited per household per six months. If you have more than the accepted amount, please contact a private disposal company.
Fire extinguishers
Fire extinguishers are only accepted at HWRCs if the manufacturer is unable to take them back.
Halon fire extinguishers are not accepted at Waterlooville, Portsmouth, Havant or Andover HWRCs.
Furniture
Furniture can be taken to your local HWRC, where it can be sold on for reuse if in good condition.

There is guidance regarding the disposal of waste upholstered domestic seating. This includes: sofas, armchairs, upholstered dining or office chairs, stools and footstools, bean bags, floor or sofa cushions. Gas bottles
HWRCs accept gas bottles up to 15kg in size, either propane or butane.
SCUBA diving bottles or air cylinders are only accepted if no alternative disposal route can be used. Alternatively you may need to contact a private disposal company.
Halon fire extinguishers
Fire extinguishers are only accepted at HWRCs if the manufacturer is unable to take them back.
Halon fire extinguishers are not accepted at Waterlooville, Portsmouth, Havant or Andover HWRCs.
Household and garden chemicals
This includes hazardous items such as white spirit, anti-freeze, oven cleaners, weed killers, insecticides, lubricants, and drain cleaners. Usually identified by a black and orange hazardous symbol on the packaging/bottle.
Such items must be delivered in a suitable sealed container. Please note a maximum of five litres can be deposited per month per household.

Paint can be taken to your local HWRC for disposal in a suitable sealed container.

Hazardous household waste including pesticides is accepted at 11 specially licensed HWRCs. Such items must be delivered in a suitable sealed container. Speak to site staff who will ensure hazardous waste is disposed of correctly. Please note a maximum of five litres can be deposited per month per household.

Plasterboard
Plasterboard is accepted as a part of your household's DIY waste allowance at all HWRCs, except at New Alresford.
Additional plasterboard that exceeds your household's DIY waste allowance will be charged for.

Rubble will be accepted as a part of your household's DIY waste allowance at all HWRCs except at New Alresford.

Sinks, toilets and shower trays
Sinks, toilets and shower trays are accepted as a part of your household's DIY waste allowance at all HWRCs, except at New Alresford.

Soil
Soil will be accepted as a part of your household's DIY waste allowance at all HWRCs except at New Alresford.

Upholstered domestic seating
Waste upholstered domestic seating may contain Persistent Organic Pollutants (POPs). This includes: sofas, armchairs, upholstered dining or office chairs, stools and footstools, bean bags, floor or sofa cushions. POPs are certain chemical substances that stay intact and do not break down.
If waste containing POPs is not managed responsibly, it could cause damage to the wider environment. Ensure waste upholstered domestic seating is kept whole where possible. Any damaged parts must be contained to reduce the risk of any textile or foam escaping into the environment on transit.
Ask site staff for guidance on where to place the item. (Hayling Island, Hartley Wintney and New Alresford HWRCs cannot accept waste upholstered domestic seating.)

Not accepted
Ammunition
HWRCs are not licensed to accept ammunition or explosives.
Contact your local police station for advice.
Asbestos
Asbestos will be accepted as a part of your household's DIY waste allowance at Andover, Basingstoke, Efford, Netley and Portsmouth HWRCs. No other HWRCs can accept asbestos.
Additional asbestos that exceeds your household's DIY waste allowance will be charged for.

Cooking oil
Cooking oil cannot be accepted at HWRCs.
It should be placed in a sealed container and placed in your general waste bin at home.
Do not pour it down the sink.
Explosives
HWRCs are not licensed to accept ammunition or explosives.
Contact your local police station for advice.
Flares
Flares are not accepted at HWRCs.
If you have out-of-date or damaged flares, first contact the place where you bought the flares. They may operate a 'take back' scheme. If not, the Solent Maritime Rescue Co-ordination Centre are able to accept small amounts of out of date or damaged flares. Call first on 02392 552100, to find your nearest disposal site and its opening times. You'll have to deliver the flares to the disposal site at an agreed time.
Fuel - petrol or diesel
Fuels are not accepted at HWRCs.
Contact a commercial disposal company or search for car breakers or garages via Trading Standards Buy with Confidence.
Japanese Knotweed
Japanese Knotweed and soil contaminated with it and some other controlled plants cannot be accepted at sites under any circumstances.

Medicines
Medicines cannot be accepted at HWRCs.
Medicines can be returned to your local dispensing chemist for safe disposal.
Tyres
Tyres can no longer be disposed of in landfill sites, and will not be accepted at HWRCs. They should be taken to a local garage or tyre and exhaust centre where they will be disposed of safely (a small charge may apply).
When you purchase new tyres the garage may take the old ones. They could also be taken to a car breakers, but ring first to check.
