Advantages of receiving a direct payment

Direct payments offer significant advantages, giving you greater control and flexibility over your care and support. However, they also come with responsibilities, such as managing your personal budget and taking on employer duties if you choose to employ a Personal Assistant (PA).

It is important to carefully consider whether direct payments are the right option for you.

Direct payments are entirely voluntary. If you decide to have a direct payment, Hampshire County Council can provide advice and information to enable you arrange your own care and support. This includes guidance on recruiting PAs through tools like the Hampshire PA Finder and support from the Direct Payment Support Service.

Advantages include:

  • choice and control: receiving a direct payment allows an individual to choose their own care providers, whether it's a care agency, a personal assistant, or other service providers that best meet their needs
  • flexibility: an individual can tailor the timing and nature of the services they receive, ensuring they fit their lifestyle and preferences
  • independence: an individual managing their own personal budget can increase their sense of independence and empowerment
  • personalisation: an individual can retain control over their care and support, making choices that fit their lifestyle

Direct payments do not affect your benefits

Receiving a direct payment does not affect your benefits as they are intended to cover care and support costs and are not considered taxable income.

If you are in receipt of certain income-based benefits and have your direct payment paid into a bank account, they may request proof this is not an income.

Types of direct payment

There are 2 types of direct payment, one-off and ongoing.
