Vows, readings and music
Vows
In a marriage ceremony there are some vows that you have to say. These words are part of the verbal contract you’re making and are legally binding. You do however have choices about what you can say. You just have to let us know on your planning form which versions you would like. Please note that you and your partner must choose the same versions. Civil partnership ceremonies do not require this verbal contract, however you can still choose to say these vows if you wish. For both marriage and civil partnership ceremonies you could also choose to have some additional vows.
Our non-statutory ceremonies, such as renewal of vows and commitment ceremonies, aren't legally binding and therefore don't require any vows, however you can still choose to say vows if you wish.
These suggested additional vows might help with inspiration.
Readings
Well-chosen readings can help to make your ceremony unique. Readings are also a wonderful way of involving friends or relatives during the day. Finding the right words to express how you feel about each other and what marriage or civil partnership means to you can make for some very special moments. Note that your readings must not have any religious content.
Music
Music choices can also help to make your wedding even more special. From traditional musical pieces written for weddings to modern pop and everything in between, music has a powerful impact on everyone’s emotions. Religious music is only allowed at religious weddings (for example, in a church). This means religious music cannot be used in our registrar-led ceremonies. If you’re unsure what might be suitable, let us know your music choices, and we can confirm whether it is appropriate.
Don’t forget to check with your venue to make sure you bring the music in the correct format (USB, iPod, MP3, etc).
