Frequently asked questions
Do you host multiple ceremonies at the same time at a registration office?
No, we never hold more than one ceremony at the same time. However, there may be several ceremonies scheduled throughout the day.
Can we view the ceremony room beforehand?
Yes! Please contact our ceremony liaison team to arrange a viewing.
Is parking available at the Registration Office?
Parking availability varies by location. You can find details specific to your venue here.
When should we arrive for our ceremony?
Please arrive 30 minutes before your scheduled ceremony time. If you prefer not to see your partner before your ceremony, one of you can arrive 30 minutes before and the other 15 minutes before.
When can we access the room to set up music and decorations?
You’ll have access to your ceremony room 30 minutes before your ceremony! As you’ll be busy with your pre-ceremony meetings, so we recommend assigning setup tasks to a trusted member of your ceremony party.
How do we play music during the ceremony?
All rooms are equipped with Bluetooth speaker systems. To connect, press and hold the pairing button until the system flashes and connects to your device. Please note: We do not provide any music, so you’ll need to bring your own.
Can we set up a video link for friends and family unable to attend?
Yes, you can connect to our WiFi and stream via a laptop or other device.
Do we need to bring decorations?
You’re more than welcome to bring your own decorations or alternatively purchase one of our decorations packages. Please click here for further details.
Do you provide reserved seating signs?
No, we don’t currently provide signs, but we recommend creating your own to ensure your ceremony party has designated seating.
Can we have confetti at the Register Office?
Of course, but please ensure it is biodegradable and is used outside the building.
Can Flower girls throw petals down the aisle?
At our Registration Offices, unfortunately flower girls cannot throw petals. If your ceremony is at an approved venue, please check with them directly.
Can we take photos outside the Registration Office?
Yes, but some areas may be restricted. We recommend discussing this with your photographer before your special day.
How long does the ceremony last?
Ceremonies typically last around 30 minutes, depending on the level of personalisation.
Will we meet the registrars before the day?
No, but our registrars will have all the details from your planning form, ready for your ceremony. Our Ceremony Liaison team, who are also registrars, are available to answer any questions leading up to your ceremony.
How will the ceremony be structured?
At Hampshire we pride ourselves on each registrar conducting a ceremony in their own personal way so this can vary. You can find an example order of ceremony here.
Can we include pets in our ceremony?
Some of our registration office ceremony rooms may have space to accommodate pets, so please ask the ceremonies team when booking. If you are holding your ceremony at an approved venue, then this is at the venue’s discretion.
Do we need to bring any paperwork on the day?
No paperwork is required on the day. All necessary documents are handled when you give Notice of Marriage or Civil Partnership.
Can we contact the attending registrars directly?
No, we don’t provide registrar contact details. However, your chosen venue can contact the Hampshire Ceremonies Team if needed. For queries before the day, please reach out to our Ceremony Liaison Team.
Do children count towards guest numbers?
Children under one do not count if seated on a guest’s lap.
Can we rearrange the chairs in the ceremony room?
No, due to health and safety regulations, chairs must remain in their set arrangement.
Do we need a celebrant for our ceremony?
No. Hampshire Registrars are legally authorised to conduct your ceremony and will tailor it your preferences! If you choose a celebrant, please note that their ceremony is not legally binding, and you’ll still need to give notice and have a legal ceremony at a Registration Office.
What name do I use to sign, if I am going to change my name?
Sign using your usual signature for the name you’re using on the morning of your ceremony. Once you receive your legal certificates, this will serve as proof of your marriage or civil partnership, and that you have the legal right to change or combine surnames.
Can I get married in my garden?
Yes, but not legally. While private gardens are not licensed for legal ceremonies, we do have a couple of different packages available for ceremonies at non-licensed venues.
Do I need to memorise my vows?
You do not need to learn your legal vows. The registrar will say them in short phrases, for you to then repeat. If you have chosen personal vows, you may wish to write these on a piece of card to read from, or the registrars can read them for you to repeat.
Can I contact you by phone to book or enquire about a ceremony?
Ceremony bookings and enquiries are handled through our online enquiry form so that your request reaches the correct team as quickly as possible. Once the booking form has been received and processed we will be in touch to arrange a call with you to discuss your booking or enquiry further.
