Hampshire – Our place and people

Hampshire is a county known for its rich history and scenic landscapes, with both urban and rural areas. It has a diverse population, reflecting a mix of ethnic backgrounds, and cultural influences. Hampshire also has connections with the armed services. All this enriches the area, making it a vibrant and dynamic place to live.

As of the latest estimates, Hampshire’s population stands at approximately 1,428,559. This figure excludes the populations of the cities of Portsmouth and Southampton, which, when included, bring the total population to around 1,894,966.

Hampshire’s population has seen significant changes over time. Historically, the county has experienced steady growth, driven by both natural increase and migration. The population of Hampshire is forecast to increase from 1,438,500 to 1,511,400 by 2030. This is an increase of 5/1%, which equates to an addition of approximately 72,900 people. See the JSNA demography report for more details.

The population is also ageing, with a significant increase in the number of residents aged 75 and older. This demographic shift is expected to continue, influencing the county’s social and healthcare services.
