Accommodation Based Services

We are dedicated to providing accommodation and in-house services to help those with the greatest needs maintain or increase their independence. This is a key part of our future plans.

The County Council has a long history of offering accommodation-based services and running our own residential and nursing homes. This not only complements the services available in the market but also gives us greater control, especially for higher-cost placements and in managing the unique needs of Hampshire’s large and rural areas.

We are proud of this approach because it reflects our commitment to providing high-quality, compassionate care that truly meets the needs of our community. Offering accommodation options to suit a variety of needs helps people stay connected in supportive environments where they can thrive.

Maintaining independence by ...

offering accommodation that meets individual needs.

In February this year the County Council announced plans to invest over £173 million to develop its in-house care homes to focus on delivering specialist nursing and complex dementia care, as well as short term pre and post hospital services to better to support the county’s ageing population ensuring that vulnerable individuals receive the comprehensive care they require.

Longer term care and support - our recently updated long term and residential care webpages provide details of our care homes and those we commission from providers across the county. We call this our Care Home Framework, it is designed to offer the right placement for an individual, at the right time and at the right cost.

Shorter term care and support – we recognised that after a stay in hospital or to avoid going into hospital people may need short-term support to help them recuperate. In 2023 around 5,500 people were supported through short term services with 65% returning to or remaining in their own home.

Having our own care homes enables us to support the most vulnerable in society in times of crises. A journey to a better home – For Janice, whose well-being was being severely impacted by her hoarding, being offered a temporary stay in one of our care homes whilst her house was cleared, cleaned and repaired was the first step on her road to recovery.

We’re excited to continue expanding our Extra Care housing options for younger adults with physical disabilities and mental health needs. Our goal is to shift away from traditional residential settings and embrace supported living, which allows individuals with complex needs to live in a home-like environment with the necessary support.

Committed to developing additional locations available in addition to the current 200 supported living beds. This approach will become the standard for individuals with autism and learning disabilities, offering them greater independence, choice, and control over their lives. For Younger Adults (18-65) feeling safe, supported, independent but never lonely is at the heart of our supported living strategy.

Our Shared Lives scheme does just this and we continue to invest in recruiting new carers and value the opportunities it offers to young adults.
