Top tips for going on a seashore safari

Here in Hampshire, we’re lucky to have some incredible coastline to explore. A seashore safari is a great opportunity to explore your local shoreline, spot some amazing wildlife and connect with nature. It’s very simple to get involved – all you need is a container, some waterproof shoes and a spotter guide of some kind.

You can purchase spotter guides from visitor centres at our country parks (Lepe Country Park and Royal Victoria Country Park are both by the sea) or you can find plenty of free resources online. Similarly, you may see one of the Bird Aware Solent rangers during your trip to the coastline. These friendly rangers are always happy to help you identify birds and other coastal wildlife. You can also visit the Bird Aware Solent website to find fun coastal activities, help with bird identification and learn all about the important work that the Bird Aware Solent team do.

If you do visit the coast for a seashore safari, it’s good practice to follow the Coastal Code to help look after wintering birds. These birds only have a limited time for feeding so it’s important to give them the space they need to feed and rest in the colder autumn and winter months.
