Why eat seasonally?
Seasonal fruit and veg are those which are ready to harvest during a particular time of year. It’s why certain items are easier to find in supermarkets some months more than others. Eating with the seasons means enjoying produce that’s ripe, tasty and full of nutrients.
Being mindful of what’s in season when you’re shopping can help to cut costs, as shops will often drop prices for products that are more readily available. And if locally-grown produce is easier to come across, you’ll likely be cutting down on the miles your food has travelled, too.
What's in season when?
Summer
As the weather warms up, the number of fruits and vegetables available to harvest grows too. In summer, you can expect lots of watery vegetables like cucumbers, courgettes and tomatoes to line the aisles, as well as sweet summer berries like raspberries and strawberries.
Autumn
Traditionally the season associated with harvest, autumn offers a mix of greens and root vegetables, such as spinach, broccoli, pumpkin and butternut squash. It’s also when British apples are at their best, so make sure not to miss out.
Winter
With shorter days and colder weather, you can expect sturdier fruits and vegetables to be available in winter. Root vegetables like parsnips, squash and swede are all options for this time of year.
Spring
Early annual harvests of spring vegetables make for fresh and tasty meals. Asparagus is a standout of this season, new potatoes are full of flavour and spring onions earn their name.
