Controlling invasive species
As part of managing habitats, we also monitor and control invasive species across Hampshire’s countryside sites in order to protect the wildlife and plants that are native to Hampshire and the UK. Some of this work includes:
- monitoring for the presence of American mink to protect water voles, including at Titchfield Haven
- monitoring and removing Himalayan balsam along river corridors. This is a plant with explosive seed pods that can spread very quickly
- monitoring and removing American skunk cabbage which can have a detrimental impact on wetland areas
- monitoring and removing Floating pennywort, for example at Basingstoke Canal or in pond areas. This plant can smother areas very quickly by forming large rafts.
