Silchester Roman Town car park

A brief description of the walk

This is a flat walk, suitable for all the family and dogs, with no stiles.

The walk starts at the car park which has approximately 40 spaces and is managed by Hampshire County Council. The car park can be found off Wall Lane, RG7 2HP. The car park requires payment to use, which can be made via RingGo - either using their app, website or by calling. You do not need a smartphone to use this service. Charges are detailed on the tariff boards at the site, and are in operation seven days a week, between 8am and 4pm from 1 October to 28 February and between 8am and 7pm from 1 March to 30 September.

This is the real Roman tour and a step back in history. Follow the Roman walls and earth works of Calleva Atrebatum, visiting its amphitheatre and calling in to see the 12th Century Church of St. Mary’s.

Directions

From Silchester Roman Town car park, the footpath starts by the information pillars. Keeping the trees and ancient earthworks to your left, continue through the gate until the path meets the larger track. Turn left, through the gate and follow the path along the wall, then alongside the buildings, through the gate and onto the road.

Turn left along the road to visit the amphitheatre. Return back along the road and keep going until you reach the Church. Now, keeping the wall to your right, follow the road for 100m. Take the footpath alongside the wall, until you reach a kissing gate. Go through the gate, along the track, turning left back to the car park.
