Making music in the Early Years Foundation Stage

Practical workshops for all

Hampshire Music Service's Early Years team provides practical music making workshops in settings with children, their parents, families - or everyone together!

Arts weeks, family learning events and music workshops provide excellent opportunities for the whole family to have fun and learn together. Members of the Early Years team are available in both term time and holidays.

Cluster training

Clusters of Early Years Foundation Stage settings can benefit from bespoke training. Opportunities include CPD for staff on singing, using instruments, stories, progression through the Early Years Foundation Stage - or anything that is needed!

We also offer workshops for children, so staff can observe their children in action.

Courses

Hampshire Music Service, in partnership with Hampshire's Early Education Childcare Unit provides practical, hands on training for practitioners in all Early Years Foundation Stage settings.

Courses range from introductory level, giving ideas for songs and games to help build confidence and a bank of resources, to more in-depth sessions on child-initiated music making and the role of music in language development.

For further information on all these opportunities and their costs, contact Hampshire Music Service on 023 8065 2037 or email [email protected] enter the subject as Early years enquiry

Sounds of Intent in the Early Years (SoI-EY)

Sounds of Intent in the Early Years (SoI-EY) is an innovative resource based on pioneering research led by Professor Adam Ockelford, Director of the Applied Music Research Centre at the University of Roehampton, in London. SoI-EY sets out just how children’s minds develop musically, from three months before birth, so that by the time they enter full time education, they are already fledgling young musicians. These new findings mean that, for the first time, it is possible to target activities aimed specifically at individual children’s levels of musical development, maximising their progress.

For more information visit the SoI-EY website.

Publications

Singing from the beginning coverSinging from the beginning is a practical guide for music in the early years packed full of songs and activities that are easy to dip into. It includes tried and tested songs and suggestions for how to give children a creative, inspiring musical start in life, to encourage them to be “Singing from the beginning”!

The songs and activities are suitable for babies, toddlers, pre-school and Reception children. The 'One To One Songs' and the 'Spoken Rhymes', for example, are perfect for babies, whilst the 'Circle Songs' and 'Role Play Songs' work brilliantly in pre-school and Reception classes. Many of the songs are set to familiar tunes, some have new, simple tunes. The notation for the songs are at the back of the book, and the link to audio files will help practitioners learn the songs. Audio files are not provided with the sample.
