Transitional protections

Firefighters' Pension Scheme 2015

On 1 April 2015 the Firefighters' Pension Scheme is changing. If you were paying into the Firefighters' Pension Scheme 1992 (FPS 1992) or New Firefighters' Pension Scheme (2006) you may have some transitional protections.

FPS 1992 member protections

  • Were you a member of the FPS 1992 scheme on 1 April 2012 and were you age 45 or over on this date? If the answer is yes, then you are a protected member of the 1992 scheme. See the protected member 1992 scheme leaflet.
  • Were you a member of the FPS 1992 scheme on 1 April 2012 and were you born between 2 April 1967 and 1 April 1971? If the answer is yes, then you are a taper protected member of the 1992 scheme. See the taper protected member 1992 scheme leaflet.
  • Were you a member of the FPS 1992 scheme on 1 April 2012 and were under the age of 41 on this date? If the answer is yes, then you are an unprotected member of the 1992 scheme. See the unprotected member 1992 scheme leaflet.

NFPS 2006 member protections

  • Were you a member of the NFPS 2006 scheme on 1 April 2012 and were you aged 50 or over on this date? If the answer is yes, then you are a protected member of the 2006 scheme. See the protected member 2006 scheme leaflet.
  • Were you a member of the NFPS 2006 scheme on 1 April 2012 and were you born between 2 April 1962 and 1 April 1966? If the answer is yes, then you are a taper protected member of the 2006 scheme. See the taper protected member 2006 scheme leaflet.
  • Were you a member of the NFPS 2006 scheme on 1 April 2012 and were under the age of 46 on this date? If the answer is yes, then you are an unprotected member of the 2006 scheme. See the unprotected member 2006 scheme leaflet.

If you are a tapered member, your Fire and Rescue Authority should write to you in the near future to let you know your personal taper date, which is when you will move across to the Firefighters' Pension Scheme 2015.
