Kitesurfing

Calshot is a popular venue for kitesurfing, with a designated launching and landing zone close to 24-7 Boardsports shop and the entrance to our site. You can explore options for tuition with Nomadic Kitesurf who are a separate organisation based at Calshot.

Update: From 1 April 2026, you no longer need a Kitesurf Access Pass to kitesurf at Calshot.

The following rules and code of conduct still apply.

Calshot is not suitable for beginners. Competent riders only.

You must:

  • follow the Calshot kitesurfing rules
  • have third-party liability insurance (available through British Kitesports (BKSA) membership)
  • be an independent kitesurfer with skills equivalent to BKSA Level 2 (L2)

Calshot kitesurfing rules

  • You must be an independent rider with skills equivalent to BKSA L2.
  • Before going out, make sure you can ride safely in deep water and carry out an effective self-rescue.
  • You must not teach or instruct others unless this has been formally agreed with Calshot Activities Centre.
  • Make sure you can manage the weather and water conditions. You should understand the effects of tides and wind.
  • On an incoming tide, a south-westerly wind can carry an inexperienced rider into the main shipping channel.
  • If you are unsure about the conditions, do not go out.
  • We do not recommend launching or landing in onshore winds at high tide.
  • You may only launch and land on the beach in front of 24-7 Boardsports. See the map for the launch and landing area.
  • Do not launch or land outside this area.
  • Keep clear of all buildings.
  • We do not recommend self-launching or self-landing.
  • Kitesurfing is not allowed in the creek from 1 April to 31 October.
  • When kitesurfing is permitted in the creek, you must use the designated launch and landing area on the shingle spit near the Sopwith Hangar.

Kitesurfing Code of Conduct

  • You must have current third-party kitesurfing insurance or BKSA membership.
  • You are responsible for your own safety and the safety of anyone affected by your actions.
  • Help other kitesurfers when launching and landing.
  • Treat other water users and members of the public with respect and consideration.
  • Always use a suitable kite safety leash system.
  • Wrap your lines when they are not in use.
  • Secure your kite properly.
  • Keep at least 2 to 3-line lengths between yourself and other water users, beach users, buildings and known hazards.
  • Do not fly kites over footpaths, parked vehicles, roads, campsites or buildings.
  • If you lose your kite or board while on the water, always report it to the Coastguard.
  • We strongly recommend wearing a helmet and buoyancy aid or impact vest.
  • You must always know and follow the rules of the water.
  • Do not ride alone. Ride with a buddy.

Public Information

Calshot can be very busy during the summer months.

The safety of everyone using the site is important. The kitesurfing code of conduct aims to improve safety for all users.

Members of the public, including families, parents, dog walkers and other water users, can help by:

  • staying aware of their surroundings
  • keeping clear of launch and landing areas
  • following any safety signs and instructions
  • taking sensible steps to avoid accidents.
