Beach, walks and trails
Located on Calshot Spit stretching out into the Solent - Calshot offers a unique view out over the water towards Portsmouth and the Isle of Wight.
Our site offers a secure base to park your car and explore the local area.
During opening hours, we have toilets and a café on-site.
Our surroundings have a rich heritage including an English Heritage castle and large indoor WW1 aeroplane hangars from when Calshot was used as an RAF base.
Beaches
Our lengths of shingle beaches are perfect for relaxing on and are rarely crowded, even on the hottest of days.
Western spit shingle beach
On the western side of the spit, overlooking the tidal Calshot marshes, here is a Site of Specific Scientific Interest (SSSI). You can enjoy catching glimpses of the varied wildlife that inhabits this environment.
Eastern spit shingle beach
On the eastern side of Calshot spit, straight ahead across the shipping channel is Portsmouth and the Isle of Wight over to the right. This is a great place to spot the many ships that regularly travel in and out of the channel towards Southampton. We do not have a lifeguard service on site and suggest caution when bathing in the waters, as we are close to the shipping channel and there can be strong currents.
Calshot beach
A short walk back along the spit you will find yourself upon Calshot beach on the southern side of the spit overlooking the Isle of Wight. This section is lined with idyllic multi-coloured beach huts and is popular in the summer months.
Walks
Ashlett creek
Highlights: Jolly Roger Pub; Fawley Power station; Calshot marshes (SSSI)
Good to knows: It can get a little boggy along some sections, so wellies or sturdy shoes are recommended.
A ‘there and back’ walk with a nice pub at Ashlett creek to enjoy. It has a mix of road walking and on trail-walking which can be wet at times so wellies/waterproof shoes are advised. The walk showcases spectacular views across Southampton Water and explores the Calshot marshes with a close look of a disused power station which is currently being demolished.
