Dec 23 2022
We’ve been working hard behind the scenes this year to create beautiful spaces in the Hampshire countryside, right on your doorstep. With 41 projects worth around £2.6m of investment either underway or completed, the Countryside Service has been working hard to look after nature, so nature can look after you.
Here are some of our highlights from 2022, from planting trees across Hampshire to renovating a farm shop stocking locally sourced produce.
If you celebrate, we hope you have a great Christmas and a Happy New Year!
Reflections and Connections Woodland
The Reflections and Connections Woodland was planted at River Hamble Country Park this year. The newly created woodland aims to create an accessible area for both staff and visitors at River Hamble. This project introduced experimental planting with climate change-resilient tree species, creating a green corridor across the country park. Not only will this help to increase biodiversity in the local area, but it’ll also create a space for friends and family to connect outside.
Thank you to our volunteers
A huge thank you to all our volunteers this year. It wouldn’t be possible to enjoy Hampshire Countryside’s sites without your hard work tree planting, repairing fences, replacing gates, clearing pathways, and putting up signposts. Over the past year, over 1,500 active volunteers have contributed 123,465 hours to the Countryside Service, the equivalent of an extra 75.8 staff! We love working together so that you can enjoy the countryside at its best. Our volunteers are at the heart of our organisation and an inspiration to us and the communities they work with. Hampshire pledge to plant 1 million trees by 2050
As part of our tree strategy and commitment to tackle climate change, we're aiming to plant one million trees by 2050. To help achieve this, we aim to create a county-wide forest through the Hampshire Forest Partnership. By connecting existing woodland sites and increasing the number of trees in the areas through group tree planting, we'll create a large forest and help tackle the climate crisis. This will increase biodiversity and provide beautiful backdrops for walks and adventures!
The opening of the Cedar Rooms Restaurant
The Cedar Rooms Restaurant opened this year in Royal Victoria Country Park. This newly renovated pizza restaurant serves a delicious family-friendly menu, featuring many locally sourced products which is a welcome boost for local suppliers. Enjoy a selection of handmade sourdough pizzas from a traditional-style pizza oven alongside ice-creams and other refreshments. With a focus on environmentally friendly catering, this restaurant is a great new addition to the park.
Our country parks have secured Green Flag status
Lepe, River Hamble, Royal Victoria, Queen Elizabeth and Staunton Country Parks have all once again gained Green Flag status in recognition of their excellent facilities and high-quality maintenance. Staunton Country Park and Royal Victoria Country Park have also achieved the Green Heritage Accreditation for the management of these sites’ unique historic features. Green Flags indicate that these sites meet the highest possible standards, are beautifully maintained and have top-notch visitor facilities, offering a wonderful day out!
The opening of Staunton Farm Shop
Staunton Farm Shop is the first farm shop to open in the Countryside Service. It is located in Staunton Farm, but you do not have to be a farm visitor to come to the shop. It stocks a variety of locally sourced produce, including hand gathered eggs from the farm, meat, fresh bread and vegetables, pickles, jams, oils, chutneys, ice creams and honey. Staunton Farm Shop supports local businesses and offers nearby residents the chance to shop locally.
