Hampshire Forest Partnership’s tree and hedgerow schemes are open for applications for planting this winter 2024/25. Join other local community groups, charities, councils, farmers and landowners to plant trees and hedgerows in your area.
As well as bringing important environmental benefits such as helping to reduce flood risk, mitigate air pollution and boosting biodiversity, tree planting can also support a wealth of social benefits and bring communities together.
Last winter, the project distributed over 34,000 tree and hedgerow plants across 120 different sites, ranging from schools to farms, hospices to country parks, and more. With the help of hundreds of local volunteers, these trees contribute to Hampshire County Council’s target of planting one million trees across the county by 2050.
We are hoping to plant even more trees this winter and have a range of trees to suit different projects:
- Disease-resistant elm trees available as whips (small trees under 1m) and feathers (1-2.5m). These make fantastic specimen or hedgerow trees and provide vital habitat for the white-letter hairstreak butterfly.
- Community orchards, with at least five fruit or nut trees and significant involvement of the local community. New orchards, as well as expansion or enhancement of existing community orchards, are eligible for funding.
- Whips for planting on farms, which bring a wealth of economic and environmental benefits. A range of different agroforestry options are eligible, including shelterbelts or ‘living barns’ and hedgerow trees. These are only available for areas that are not existing woodland, or extending existing woodland.
- Whips are also available for schools, recreation grounds or community greenspaces. These can be planted as individual trees, tree circles or small pockets of woodland (up to 0.5ha). We may be able to help run a tree planting event, subject to the team’s availability.
