Local volunteers have helped to plant trees to enhance the wildlife and biodiversity at Castle Shore Park, near Portchester Castle. The green-fingered team planted 350 trees in total, including 300 small trees of mixed native species in a new mini woodland area. 25 alder trees were also planted in wet areas to help reduce flooding, along with five large black poplar trees to create a central feature, and four mirabelle plum trees to provide fruit for visitors. Large areas of previously mown grass are also going be rewilded for wildflowers and to improve the biodiversity of the site.
As kingfishers have been spotted in the area, we hope these trees will provide perches and shelter for them close to the water, as well as habitats for other birds and mammals.
The project was made possible by our partnership with the Tree Council, Fareham Borough Council, and The Litter Ladies volunteering group, as well as local volunteers.
