This study was initially started when Romsey Local History Society (LTVAS) was given a substantial bequest from a member, Christopher Collier. Since Christopher was very interested in the Saxon history of the locality it was decided to use the money to pay Winchester University to advise and train members for this study. After 4-5 years they formally wound up the study but a number of active members continue to extend and refine it. They have studied: the Saxon archaeology of the lower Test Valley, the local Saxon charters, the written, architectural, and archaeological history of Romsey Abbey, the local landscape and topography and early maps. This exhibition in our foyer illustrates their findings.
