Apply for a mooring

We manage over 600 midstream moorings on the River Hamble on behalf of the Crown Estate. With access to the Solent, good communications facilities and a range of boating services available in this area, it’s a popular choice for anyone looking to moor their vessel.

As the demand for moorings in this area is high, we have a waiting list for prospective mooring holders to join. For some of the categories included this can mean a relatively short wait, but for some of the more popular categories, the wait can be ten years or longer.

How it works

The waiting list operates on a first-come, first-served basis for each mooring category. Those on the waiting list will need to pay a non-refundable £30 admin fee to the Crown Estate annually (in October or on joining the list).

Failure to make this payment by the deadline set by the Harbour Authority may lead to removal from the waiting list, with no guarantee of re-joining at the same position in the list if payment is made.

Mooring license

Please see the mooring license terms for a full breakdown of your responsibility as a mooring holder, including terms of subletting, maintenance standards and annual payments.

Charges

Harbour dues are fees paid by river users that allow the Harbour Authority to maintain its statutory responsibilities, preserve local wildlife and keep the river safe. They should be paid to the Harbour Authority annually in addition to mooring fees.

Pontooned moorings

On being offered a piled pontooned mooring, the incoming mooring holder will need to take a financial share in the pontoon. It is the mooring holder’s responsibility to arrange this and any related insurance.

Pontoons must be maintained in a serviceable condition, and the Harbour Authority may remove any pontoon which it judges to be a risk to safety.

Before placing a pontoon on a mooring, please seek approval from the opposite mooring holder and the Harbour Authority.
