Planning an event

If you want to organise and run an event on the canal and/or towpath you must gain permission.

Events involving lots of people, such as fun runs, sponsored walks, or raft races all exceed the public right of quiet enjoyment in the countryside. If you are considering an event that uses the towpath or part of the canal, then you will need to gain our permission. Events cause lots of wear and tear on the towpath and canal infrastructure and you will therefore need to pay a fee.

How to book

We will need to know of the proposed date and location of the event.

The amount of notice you need to give us will depend on the size and type of event planned.

The minimum period of notice is one calendar month. Large events will require at least six months notice.

You must provide the following:

  • completed events booking form
  • £10 million Public liability insurance
  • risk assessment
