- If you are a woman married to a man

If you are a woman and have a husband, he will receive a pension if you die:
- For the first 13 weeks your husband's pension along with any children's pensions, is normally equal to the amount you were receiving at the time of death
- After that, the pension will be half of your pension based only on service from 17 May 1990, and the amount of any GMP in respect of service from 6 April 1988 to 16 May 1990
- If you are a man married to a woman

If you are a man and have a wife, she will receive a pension if you die:
- For the first 13 weeks your wife's pension along with any children's pensions, is normally equal to the amount you were receiving at the time of death. This will be followed by a reduced long term pension
- If you joined the PPS before 1 April 1972, the amount of your wife's pension will depend on whether you chose to uprate your pension in respect of your service before April 1972
- If you married before you left service or opted out of the PPS, your wife's pension will be based your pay and all of your pensionable service
- If you married after you left service or opted out, your wife's pension will be based only on service after 5 April 1978
- If you joined the PPS after 1 April 1972 the pension will be half of your pension before commutation
- If you are a woman with a wife or civil partner

If you are female with a wife or civil partner, she will receive a pension if you die:
- For the first 13 weeks your civil partner's pension, along with any children's pensions, will be equal to your pension
- After that, the pension will be half of your pension based only on service from 17 May 1990, and the amount of any GMP in respect of your service from 6 April 1988 to 16 May 1990
- If you are a man with a husband or civil partner

If you are male with a husband or civil partner, he will receive a pension if you die:
- For the first 13 weeks your civil partner's pension, along with any children's pensions, will be equal to your pension
- After that, the pension will be half of your pension based only on service from 6 April 1988

If you have children, they will receive a pension if they are eligible. See information about children's pensions.
If you die once you're receiving your pension and there is not a spouse's or civil partner's pension, the eligible children's pensions will be increased for the first 13 weeks to equal your pension.
