Pension for your husband, wife or civil partner

Police Pension Scheme 1987 (PPS 1987)

This summarises what your spouse or civil partner could receive after your death. The amount will depend on your circumstances and whether you are paying into the PPS, have a deferred pension or are receiving your pension.

If you are a woman married to a man

If you are female and have a husband, he may receive a pension if you die:

  • The pension will be half of your pension based only on service from 17 May 1990, and the amount of any Guaranteed Minimum Pension (GMP – the minimum the PPS must pay) in respect of service from 6 April 1988 to 16 May 1990
  • Pension may be increased for the first 13 weeks if you die in service or once you're receiving your pension
If you are a man married to a woman

If you are male and you have a wife, she may receive a pension if you die:

  • If you married before you left service or opted out of the PPS, your wife's pension will be based your pay and all of your pensionable service
  • If you married after leaving service or opting out, your wife's pension will be based only on service after 5 April 1978
  • Pension may be increased for the first 13 weeks if you die in service or once you're receiving your pension
If you are a woman with a wife or civil partner

If you are female with a wife or civil partner, she may receive a pension if you die:

  • The pension will be half of your pension based only on service from 17 May 1990, and the amount of any GMP in respect of your service from 6 April 1988 to 16 May 1990
  • Pension may be increased for the first 13 weeks if you die in service or once you're receiving your pension
If you are a man with a husband or civil partner

If you are male with a husband or civil partner, he may receive a pension if you die:

  • The pension will be half of your pension based only on service from 6 April 1988
  • Pension may be increased for the first 13 weeks if you die in service or once you're receiving your pension
Spouse's or civil partner's change in circumstances

Your husband's, wife's or civil partner's pension will stop if he or she marries, forms a civil partnership or cohabits, but children's pensions will continue.

The police authority has the discretion to restore the pension if the marriage, civil partnership or cohabitation ends.
