Learning

An inspiring setting for outdoor learning for all ages, and rich heritage to discover

With extensive areas of shingle shoreline, parkland and mature woodland, as well as wildflower areas and a community orchard, Royal Victoria Country Park is an exciting and inspiring outdoor learning resource for all ages.

The Royal Victoria Chapel exhibitions and outdoor interpretation points offer opportunities to discover the story of the military hospital that once occupied the site and the lives of the many hundreds of people who worked and were treated there.

Booking information

All groups must book in advance. We recommend booking early to avoid disappointment. We encourage large groups to make Chapel visits on a Monday or Tuesday, when the venue is closed to the public, but other days can be arranged.

Group sizes

Our workshop sessions can accommodate up to 35 students. Tower visits are for a maximum of 20 students at a time.

Larger groups will be split to complete a carousel of activities. For groups of more than 60 students visiting the Chapel, this will need to include an outdoor element such as a self-guided walk due to space restrictions.

Teacher to student ratios

We ask you to ensure your student/teacher ratio meets our safety policy requirements.

  • Foundation stage or KS1: 1 adult to every 6 students
  • KS2: 1 adult to every 10 students (1:7 if visit will include a Tower tour)
  • Secondary school visits: 1 adult to every 15 students (1:10 if visit will include a Tower tour)
  • College or university visits: 1 adult must accompany the group

Risk assessment

Our risk assessment guidelines for educational groups are intended to help you prepare for your visit. This document contains information on the general assessment of risk for both indoor and outdoor activities on the site, however it is not valid as a risk assessment in itself. We recommend that teachers make a free pre-visit to write your own risk assessment, as well as to discuss your activities and the specific needs of your group.

Pre-visit

A pre-visit is recommended and can be provided for up to two teachers per school. During this time, you can visit the Park and exhibitions in the Chapel and talk to one of the education team about the workshop you have booked and any specific needs of children in your group.

Parking

Coaches will need to drop-off and pick-up from the Tall Pines car park. Minibuses can park in any of the car parks on site. Free car parking is available for school groups taking part in booked activities at Royal Victoria Country Park and the Chapel.
