Netley Military Cemetery

The Netley Military Cemetery is at the back of the hospital site. The records indicate there have been over 3,600 burials here, but some have since been removed (e.g. for burial in the person’s home cemetery) and others remain unmarked.

According to the records, the first burials in the cemetery were made in 1864. The cemetery was used for both hospital staff and their families, including a number of children. The cemetery contains 637 burials from the 1st World War, but only 35 from the 2nd World War. In addition to the UK and Commonwealth graves, there are a number of war graves of other nationalities, including 69 German graves dating from the 1st World War.

An audio trail will soon be available to help you discover the stories of some of the people buried in the cemetery.
