Changing job under the Local Government Pension Scheme

Changing job with current employer

If you change your job with your current employer, what happens to your pension depends on whether they consider you:

  1. Have been continuously employed - your pension account will continue as well.
  2. Have ended one job and started a new one - your current pension account will become deferred and your employer will instruct us to set up a new pension account for you, see: Re-joining the LGPS to find out more.

If you have less than two years' membership, including any transferred from other pension schemes, it will be joined to your new account. You cannot opt to leave it separate.

Ask your employer if you are not sure how they will treat your pension when you change jobs.

New job with another LGPS employer

If you leave your current job and start a new one with another LGPS employer, your current pension account will cease and your new employer will instruct us to open another pension account for you.

See: Rejoining the LGPS in the Past member section to find out more.

Leaving your job

See the Leaving employment or Retiring section if you are leaving your job – including retirement, redundancy or opting out.
