Retirement Declaration form

Everyone who is retiring must complete a retirement declaration form no earlier than 3 months before your planned retirement date. The form:

  • confirms your personal details,
  • advises us of the choices you make about retirement,
  • collects information about the total value of your pensions, as required by HM Revenue and Customs.

You can complete a retirement declaration form online through our Member Portal. The form contains notes to help you complete it.

You can now view the progress of us bringing you pension into payment by using the 'Track my case' function on the Member Portal. This can be found in the menu bar at the top of the page once you have logged in. If you have no yet registered for the Member Portal, you can do so by visiting https://mypensionportal.hants.gov.uk

If you need the form in an alternative format, please see our forms page.

You are asked to make some decisions in this form:

Exchanging pension for lump sum

The LGPS allows a member to exchange a certain amount of pension in order to provide an additional one-off lump sum. For every £1 of annual pension that you give up, you will receive an additional £12 of lump sum. HM Revenue and Customs limit the amount of pension that you can give up.

For further details see:

Taking a once-and-for-all lump sum (also known as "Trivial Commutation lump sum")

This option is only available for members with low value pensions.

At retirement, instead of receiving a monthly pension, you can choose to take a once-and-for-all lump sum provided you meet the HM Revenue and Custom (HMRC) conditions outlined below:

  • The value of ALL pensions you are entitled to (except your State Pension and any spouse, civil or cohabiting partner's pension you receive) is less than £30,000. Please note this limit relates to the total value of your pension benefits under HMRC rules and is not the annual amount of pension you currently receive
  • If you have previously been paid a trivial commutation lump sum from any other registered pension scheme(s), then you must let us know, and your LGPS benefits can only be paid as a trivial commutation lump sum within 12 months of the first trivial commutation payment that you received
  • You must have all or part of your lump sum allowance available

If you satisfy these conditions and choose to take a trivial commutation lump sum, then HMRC require you to take a trivial commutation lump sum in respect of all your LGPS benefits in England and Wales.

Once you have taken a trivial commutation lump sum neither you nor your dependants will have any further entitlements in the LGPS.
